Nerve cells (neurons) are collected into bundles called nerves carry electrochemical messages: external and internal stimuli. Peripheral nervous system: cranial nerves, spinal nerves, plexuses, peripheral nerves. Central nervous system (cns: brain, spinal cord. Cranial nerves: messages between brain and the head and neck: exception = vagus nerve (carries messages to and from neck, chest, and abdomen) Spinal nerves: carry messages between spinal cord, chest, abdomen, extremities. Plexus: large network of nerves in pns. Mixed nerves: both sensory and motor fibers. Example: touching fire, afferent nerves tell brain its hot! , efferent nerves move hand away . 12 cranial nerves: oculomotor - eye, abducens-eye, ochlear-eye (?, olfactory-smell, facial-face and scalp movement, glossopharyngeal-tongue throat movement, hypoglossal-speech/swallowing, accessory-swallowing, vagus-heart rate, coughing, sneezing (wandering, vestibulocochlear-hearing, balance, trigeminal- forehead, optic-vision. Autonomic nervous (function automatically: carry impulses away from cns, blood pressure, heart rate, breathing rate, body temp, digestion, 2 types. Sympathetic nerves: when body is under stress (increase heart rate, dilates airways, slows digestion)
