PSYC100 Lecture 18: Development &Language
Document Summary
When child is separated from primary caregiver, child is upset. When caregiver returns, child wants to be readily consoled by caregiver and in addition to that, child is able to go on and continue to play/explore. Anytime there has been a distress cue given by the child, the caregiver has a history of being responsive/sensitive to the child. When the situation is secure, caregiver is constantly sensitive and responsive to the cues given by child. When the mother/caregiver returns they are unable to use caregiver as a place for security, consolation. Tend to look down and avoid looking at caregiver. This type of behavior pattern can be formed through a history of some type of neglect, emotional non-availability, parent often missing important cues, (depression in parent), etc. Even when child is clinging to caregiver, child will swat away at other comfort offered to them by caregiver.
