Attachment: enduring emotional bond b/w infant & primary caregiver. Things attachment affects: interaction with others (clingy v. aloof, security w/ yourself, cognitive development. How does attachment come about: learning theory. Need for food primary driver of hunger primary reinforcer food. Acquired need for mom: harlow theory secondary reinforcer mom, baby monkey experiment: get surrogate moms (1 gives food & cloth mom gives contact comfort, additional ingredients: rocking motion, warmth (help facilitate attachment) ** a good attachment provides: secure base from which to explore the world. Infants enter world with arsenal of instinctual responses. Proximity promoting: responses that bind mom to child: crying, smiling, cooing/gurgling. Proximity seeking: responses that bind child to mom: clinging, sucking, following. Clear cut attachment: 6-7 months (prefer company of caregiver) Infants interpret world in terms of concepts internal working model: track caregiver"s (1) responsiveness, (2) consistency, (3) affection/warmth. Visual acuity: ability to detect fine special detail.
