Language structure: phonemes smallest distinctive units of sound (not redundant with letters) Indicated by letters, but letters and phonemes are not indicative. Trained on a set of nonsense words (bidaku, padoti, golabu, tupiro: presented string of words (bidakupadotigolabutupirogolabupadoti) Language vs. communication: bee waggle, vervet monkey calls, washoe: was taught asl and could produce up to 200 signs, could also coin new words. Limitations: ape asl is childlike, ape vocabulary is limited, confirmation bias by experimenter.
