MMC 2604 Lecture 19: 19 (speaker)
Document Summary
Academics typically publish books for fellow academics. Some publish for the general public: combine scholarship with readability, type of writer he is. Index the book: author should index it, the author knows it the best, price the books quite high, may only print 500 copies and sell about half to libraries. Trade press: first book he published with a trade press: the gulf. Academic publishers didn"t work out well for him: the gulf. No one had written on the history of the gulf of mexico. People usually think of nice beaches, hurricanes, and oil: with trade press, you need to deal with the press through a literary agent. Sent letters/proposal to 25 agents, heard back from 2 of them: for ction you need to send the entire book over, monetary advance with trade press, send book to your editor, everything is done in house. Also takes about a year: book tour, get book reviews.
