Cognitive appraisal- interpretation: james-lange theory of emotion. Perceived event physiological and behavioral responses emotional experience. Emotions arise from the psychological arousal (sadness comes from crying) People with spinal cord damage have less emotion: cannon-bard theory of emotion. We sometimes feel emotion instantly before body reacts. Physical changes that occur are too general to distinguish between emotions. Perceived event physiological and behavioral responses and emotional experience are independently activated at the same time: brain centers of emotion. Research cannot pinpoint a single region on the cortex that regulates all emotion. Can be measured through autonomic activity (perspiration, respiration, heart rate, etc. ) Polygraphs- try to pick up emotional stress caused by lying. Video 2- emotion part 2: expressive component. Generally consistent across cultures except for sadness, anger, and fear nationalities: more accurate when judging people of their own. Positive emotions increase muscle motion in cheeks. Negative emotions increase muscle motion in forehead and brow area.
