Following the attacks of September 1, 2001, the government began amending existing
surveillance policies, while also implementing brand new ones. This detriment to
American privacy rights was unprecedented and allowed for the government to navigate
new ways to limit the rights to privacy. This specific source both outlines what policies
were utilized, and how the government was able to utilize new technology to enact them
nationwide. The transition from a print to a more digital world during this same time
period only made it easier than ever before for the government to monitor activity of the
American people, however, “with the many benefits of technology come significant
privacy risks” (Shamsi). This article has also discussed specific parallels between the
once outdated Electronic Communications Privacy Act, and the newly installed acts such
as the Patriot’s Act, and the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act that set guidelines for
the regulation of privacy rights moving forward.
Hypothesis
Domestic surveillance policies implemented after 9/11 such as the U.S. Patriot Act, the FISA
Amendments Act, and even the replacement of the Electronic Communications Privacy Act,
changed the use of technology for monitoring behavior and therefore increased the ability of the
government to limit Americans’ privacy rights. The independent variable in our question are the
