Research Question
Our previous research question was: to what extent has the ongoing War on Terrorism
affected American privacy rights? We decided to revise our question in order to make it more
specific and direct. The revised question is: to what extent have domestic surveillance policies
implemented after September 11, 2001 affected American privacy rights? By specifying a
timeframe of post 9/11 we can be more clear about our measurements and focus on a fixed
period of time after a major incident of terrorism occurred. Instead of identifying a broad topic of
the War on Terrorism, we changed the question to specifically focus on domestic surveillance.
This will allow us to collect evidence on one common tactic rather than collecting evidence that
lumps all tactics together. We are determining the extent to which the war’s tactics have directly
affected specific policy areas. By surveying citizens’ attitudes towards changes throughout this
time period, we can get an indication of how legislation affects everyday life for Americans.

In the time after 9/11, surveillance practices have crossed the line by invading people’s
privacy, free speech, and other liberties. Due to the numerous concerns about national
security, the United States has brought more initiatives in improving counterterrorism
efforts. This source further explains how the executive branch of power has expanded
which allowed for more surveillance techniques and investigations. This source also
explores the potential violations of civil liberties from the surveillance programs.
