These false assumption of policing should be presented correctly when persuading
applicants because their unrealistic minds will make them quit their jobs (White & Escobar,
2008, p.121). The fictional portrayal of one day in the life of a police officer depicted in movies
and other forms of media presents a blurry picture into the actual duties and responsibilities of a
police officer. By all means, one may very well feel satisfaction and receive a form of intrinsic
value in being a police officer dubbed “loose cannon” or “ gunslinger”, but in most cases, words
and arbitration should be the weapons of choice when dealing with disputes and conflicts in
everyday society. When the actual demands of the profession offer an extreme contrast to the
scenes depicted in popular forms of media, it makes police officers susceptible to quit their jobs.
Another situation regarding to recruiting new applicants would be the physical and mental
requirements that would verify if the new applicant is eligible to become a police officer. With
knowledge of the applicant, the police department could see if the person has the basic
requirements in order to become a potential successful officer. “The benefits of a physically fit
officer have been shown to surpass the specifics of job aptitude.” (Bisset, Bisset, & Snell, 2012,
p.211). The applicant must at least pass the physical requirement to become an officer or there
will be barriers that restrict that specific officer from doing their duty whether it is mentally or
physically. Passing these requirements are extremely important for the recruiter because the life
of a police officer is generally physically challenging than many other jobs. According to studies,
research has clearly demonstrated that as a population, police officers are generally in poorer
health and less physically fit than members of the general population (Bisset, Bisset, & Snell,
2012, p.211). With this knowledge we can see how an unprepared applicant may easily decide
and ultimately withdraw from the police force or fall under depression when working under such
conditions due to stress.
