Document Summary

Social psychology: how people influence other people"s thoughts, action, and feelings. Humans have motivation to form and fit into groups and maintain good relationships within. Groups: outgroups: groups you don"t belong to, in-group. Reciprocity: if person a helps or harms person b, person b helps or harms. Example: a and b are friends, a hates c, so b hates c too. Out of group homogeneity effect: people tend to view outgroup members as less varied than in-group members. Social identity theory: in-groups consist of individuals who perceive themselves to be members of the same social category and experience pride through their group membership. You define yourself by the group and it is part of your social identity. In-group favoritism: tendency of people to evaluate favorably and privilege members of the in-group more than outgroup members. Example: you forgive mistakes of in-group members before you would forgive outgroup members. Because you naturally work together to keep resources within group.
