Mature through myelination: begins on spinal cord during first trimester of pregnancy and on neurons during second trimester- brains way of insulating wires. Nerve fibers are wrapped with fatty sheath. Increases speed at which fibers are able to transmit signals. Regions of brain communicate with each other through synaptic connections o o o. Neurons grow and make new connections (at 4, 80% adult size)
