A) Freud’s view of the mind
1. Conscious, preconscious, and unconscious
Preconscious- stuff in mind that could be conscious but is not.
Ex)- songs, memories, feeling in back of your mind
Unconscious- things in your mind that affect your conscious actions but we are
unaware of
Ex)- Unconscious, sexual feelings affect conscious actions (Cannot be tested,
even if it is true
2. 3 parts of the mind
a) id- humans and animals are born with instincts
We act certain ways related to helping us survive.
Where the urge to do things comes from, motivation
1) Instinctive urges and desires
2) Pleasure principle – if it feels good, do it, vice versa.
3) Immediate gratification- urges met now.
b) Ego- Part of mind that deals with rest of the world.
