Breakdown in cognitive, emotional, or behavioral functioning- something has gone awry. Example 2: fear all evening when on date and friends agree that your date is dangerous. Cognitions (thought process): paranoia, terrified (if something happened) No: personal distress or impairment, atypical or not culturally expected. Either one can lead to difficulty performing appropriate and expected roles. Ex: high level of anxiety internally but not much outward expression.
