Document Summary
Adolescence is span of time between childhood and adulthood. It begins at about 12 years of age and ends in late teens or early 20s. Prior to turn of 20th century, adolescence was not seen as a separate, distinct developmental stage children would enter into some form of apprenticeship after puberty. In the united states, as nation changed from rural to urban society, role of children shifted in 1904, american psychologist g. stanley hall referred to adolescence as time of (cid:498)storm and stress(cid:499) older brother. Puberty marks stage of rapid physiological growth and sexual maturation. One early sign of maturation is significant increase in weight and height, today a different view emerges from research. One expert said: occurring around 11 for girls and 12 for boys. Growth spurts last about 2 years with gains in height of about 6 to 7 inches in girls and 8 to 9 inches in boys.
