Emerged from the late 19th century to the end of wwi (about 1917) It began as local movements and grew to become national movements. It targeted corruption in monopolies, promoted social contract and education, and looked to the government for solutions. Led to the passing of the pure food and drug act as well as the federal meat. Social gospel: sought to use faith as a social tool of reform. Ministers, priests, and rabbis left their parishes to serve troubled cities. This wasn"t very dominant in reforming, but it is significant because it engaged religion with reform. Hull house (chicago) founded in 1889 by jane adams. Served as a model for 400 similar institutions. College educated women that worked at the settlement houses. There was a belief that women needed to be sheltered from harsh environments. Settlement house movement led to social workers as a profession. There was a rise in the number of americans in skilled professional work.
