Families are the major source of primary socialization. Three-category classification of parenting styles must be cautiously applied to racial and ethnic minority parents. Primary task of socialization is to familiarize a child with his or her culture. Involves teaching children norms and values: norms: widely accepted rules about how people should behave, values: goals or principles that are held in high esteem by a society. Schools, peer groups, and the media further exaggerate gender differences. Conservative protestantism: fathers are authoritarian with their children, men believe in traditional gender roles, spank children more often, hug and praise children more often. Mainline protestantism: fathers are less authoritarian, spank children less often. Provide control: supervise and monitor children"s behavior, teach the limits of acceptable behavior. Basic list changes according to the parent"s values. Those who believe in gender stereotyped roles might add that parents must stress on androgynous behavior: androgynous behavior: behavior that has the characteristics of both genders.
