Penal style of control is logic social control, responding to deviance with punishment with pain. Style of control when there"s serious world harm and the liability is individual. The goal is retribution, to even the score. Trilateral control of penal control is the police, justice system. When an individual or unofficial other responds to an individual who may have unilateral social control when it"s the victim. One way of paying attention to relational distance is the relationship between offenders and victims. When the relationship between an offender and victim gets closer, the likelihood of penal control increases. Pattern is very robust, shows up in lots of different kinds of meaning. We can measure the relational distant between the victim and suspect along with the control agents such as the police and prosecutor. The greater relationship between victims and control agents the lower the likelihood of penal control.
