BADM 350 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Asynchronous Transfer Mode, Transmission Control Protocol, Vint Cerf
Ch 6. Networks

• Internet =|= world wide web
o Tim Berners-Lee: inventor of world wide web and created FTP (file transfer protocol)
(used to upload or download huge data files)
▪ HTTP, HTML → W3C
o Vint Cerf: [co]father of internet (turned on 1983)
• Communications Media and channels
o Twisted-pair wire (old phone lines), coaxial cable (tvs), fiber optics (uses light waves)
o
• Local area network: connects two or more devices in a limited geographical region so that every
device on the network can communicate with every other device.
• Transmission technologies
o Digital subscriber line (DSL), asynchronous transfer mode (ATM), synchronous optical
network (SONET), T-carrier system
• Network Protocols
o Ethernet, Transmission control protocol/Internet protocol (TCP/IP)
• 4-layer TCP/IP Protocol
o Application, transport, internet, network interface
o Transmission Control Protocol (TCP): establishes connections among sending and
receiving web computers and handles assembly of packets at point of transmission and
reassembly at receiving end
o Internet protocol (IP): provides internet’s addressing scheme
