MCB 150 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Endosome, Mannose, Phospholipid
Document Summary
Lysosomes, or what happens when the cell needs to degrade something? . Lysosome is the toolbox, lysosomal acid hydrolases are the tools. These hydrolases only are found in the lysosome and they are only active in environment of ph of around 5. We do this to protect ourselves so that the hydrolases will not hurt the cell if the lysosome explodes. The lumenal surface of a lysosomal membrane contains a thick layer of carbohydrate (this part is true), and there are no enzymes in a lysosome that hydrolyze carbohydrates (this part is false). The membrane of a lysosome is synthesized with special phospholipids that are more resistant to hydrolysis. There is no special lipid resistant to hydrolysis. Mannose-6-phosphate provides a special signal that prevents acid hydrolases from catalyzing their respective reactions in the presence of that signal. Mannose -6-phosphate is only a zip code. Only tells where to take the proteins.
