Document Summary

2 models of persuasion: heuristic-systematic model, elaboration-likelihood model. Central (systematic) process: conscious, slower, more deliberate. Elm lists factors that determine how likely you will elaborate (think a lot) or not. The basic idea: when you see a message, can either think about it a lot or a little. Two routes to persuasion: central and peripheral. Central: involves message elaboration: extent to which a person carefully thinks about issue-relevant arguments contained in persuasive messages. Used when there is high ability and motivation. Peripheral: does not involve elaboration: without any active thinking about the attributes of the issue or the object of consideration. Used when there is low ability and motivation. Higher personal relevance, greater willingness to pay attention to argument central route. When people are unable to pay close attention to the arguments, they are swayed more by peripheral cues, like. Weak arguments are sometimes paired with distractions (e. g. , loud music) to make people more susceptible to peripheral influence.
