Delinquent activities that bring pleasure to the participants, but can be destructive and negative uses of free time - if done in excess. Ideational mentality - believe something is bad based on our own ideas/ beliefs (morally derived) Sensate mentality - believe something is bad based on our experiences. Explanations have been sought in attempts to reduce and understand. A feeling of disconnection and isolation from society; feelings of not fitting in. Mismatch between individual circumstances & beliefs and larger social values. Can be connected to leisure boredom - perception leisure is meaningless and doesn"t satisfy needs for optimal arousal. Delinquent behavior is learned through interaction with others in intimate personal groups. Because behavior is learned from social and friendship groups -> if group is delinquent, deviant forms of leisure may be learned. Impact of peers is even greater if deficiencies at home.
