ANTH 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Viru Valley, Systematic Sampling, Central Place Theory
Document Summary
One major task of archaeologists is to locate and record the whereabouts of the site. Ground survey and arial survey - no single formula to finding sites. An area may be considered worthy of surveying based on. Pros: - chronology/activity - a lot of info about one place. Cons: time/money - site based (not regional) - look at one dot on landscape. Pros: - site type and distribution - money. Cons: amount of site based data - chronology. Diachronic- look at timescale and look from modern day all the way to the past and look at a long length of time. Location, distribution and organization of archaeological sites and remains. New emphasis on reconstructing full human use of the landscape. Surface archaeology documents only what lays on or near the ground surface. Intrusive survey - just pick up and take and record the artifacts and you need set up to store and preserve the artifacts.
