Peptic ulcer occurs when all layers of the wall of the stomach or duodenum are eroded. Peptic ulcer can occur anywhere in gi tract that contacts gastric hydrochloric acid, pepsin. Gastric ulcer pain- 1-2 hrs after a meal; Duodenal ulcer pain- 2-4 hrs after a meal and often involves night pain. Stress ulcer is an ulcer that is caused by acute or chronic stress. H. pylori is a gram negative spiral bacterium. Found in half of the world population. Must be treated or infection will persist. H. pylori infection associated with other diseases. H. pylori infection occurs in many patients with gastritis, gastric ulcers, duodenal ulcers, gastric cancer. Diet high in fruits and vegetables may help prevent ulcer and infection with h. pylori.
