PSCH 324 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Display Rules, Cultural Universal, Collectivism
Document Summary
We are presented w/ stimuli in our everyday lives. Our bodies" reactions that prepare us to deal w/ these stimuli are what some would call emotions. There is a certain response for every emotion. Emotions aren"t just bodily responses it"s how we think about these responses that matters. James-lange suggests: that emotions should be fairly universal. Humans are physiologically similar through evolution, so we should meet challenges w/ similar physiological responses. If the emotions we experience are based on interpretation, we could imagine that people from different backgrounds and belief systems would have different emotional experiences. If emotional expressions are cultural universals, we would expect people from different cultures to be able to identify which emotion expressions go w/ emotions. We do show a bias when it comes to recognition of expressions of emotions. Participants across many studies showed on average a 9% increase in accuracy when judging facial expressions of their own culture.
