Cocaine started out as medicine- like most drugs. Then people started using it for recreational use. Extracted coca from the bean to make cocaine. Coca-cola; kola nuts + syrup + extract; originally used as a medicine. In 1903, the cocaine was taken out and it was sold as a drink. Still used kola leaves and nuts but replaced the cocaine with sugar. Big businesses became involved with cocaine and coca-cola. Coca leaves are used to make cocaine; people would eat the leaves to deal with high altitudes and fatigue. Until opium, cocaine made you more alert rather than dull. Both drugs (opium and cocaine) made you feel really good. Until the late 19th century, coca was a failed drug- stayed local. In the mid 1900"s, a pharmaceutical company sold cocaine to researchers. People were combining cocaine and alcohol together. Cocaine was known to cure opium addiction. Cure one drug by replacing it with another.
