SOC 337 Lecture 24: school continued
Document Summary
Relationship to social class, school failure, and delinquency is complicated. Some research suggests that class does not matter at all: poor school performance increases the likelihood of delinquency for youth of all classes. Some research suggests that social class produces different effects: middle/upper class students may become more delinquent upon failing in school because the expectations to succeed are higher. Liazos (1978) says working class youth turn to delinquency when they are successful in school: working class youth become delinquents when they reject the current system that prepares them for alienated work and lives. High school dropout rates are incredibly high in the united states: nearly 1/3 of high school students drop out of school or do not graduate on time. Predictors of dropping out can be separated into two general categories: individual level characteristics of the juvenile, characteristics of the school.
