Media effects tradition one of the most prolific, socially important, and highly scrutinized areas of mass comm research. Many studies show tv viewing distorts perception of reality. Over time, heavy tv viewers develop worldviews similar to what is seen on tv (mean world syndrome) How messages are made, managed, and distrubuted. The way images are portrayed in media content. 1st study for president johnson"s commission on the causes and prevention of violence. Measured tv audience perceptions of world violence and aggression. Performs content analysis of tv violence annually. Investigates cultivation effect of tv portrayals regarding age, gender, social behavior, etc. Old er people rare and often portraying sick or dying characters. Violent crime involves more than half of all characters. Consistent reality distortion lends credence to theory. A dominant set of attitudes and values is repetitively presented on tv. Some real-world events support distorted image and reinfoce cultivation effect. Cultivation assumes that tv and the viewing public interact.
