Had most powerful & radical anti-colonial movement in region. There were more accommodators than rebels who don"t really care about politics, concerned about family & making a living. In vn & other places in sea, if japanese hadn"t arrived, country would be under colonial rule for very long time. Never will heard of ho chi minh or vietnam war. Resistance to colonialism was uniquely well-organized & sustained. Stage 1 & 3 enjoyed more support than anywhere else. Why so radical: strong sense of ethnic pride (distinct ppl, dif. from chinese, khmer & hill people; glory in their history of resistance to chinese invasion; regarded themselves as strongest & smartest ppl on earth). Therefore, easy to mobilize ppl 4 resistance, 1 s t to french & then american: french conquest caused a unique cultural crisis. Suddenly deprived confucian influence in gov, created great psychological rupture, much more painful than any buddhist or islam colonies experienced.
