Document Summary

Chapter 17 & 18: fatty acid and amino acid oxidation. Palmitoyl-coa + 7 coa + 7fad + 7nad+ + 7h20 -> 8acetyl coa + 7 fadh2 + 7nadh + h: 7 rounds. Beta oxidation of unsaturated fa: enoyl-coa hydratase cannot work on cis double bonds, monounsaturated fa, convert cis to trans. Requires one enzyme: move bond one carbon. Beta oxidation of polyunsaturated fa: cis to trans isomerize, same enzyme as for monounsaturated, reduce, enzyme only used for poly-unsaturated. Isoemerize: enters second step of beta oxidation. Oxidation of odd carbon number fa: oxidize normally. Last step is 1 acetyl coa - citric acid cylcle and 1 propionyl-coa -> alpha-methylmalonyl. Coa -> methylmalonyl coa -> succinyl coa -> citric acid cycle. Methylmalonyl-coa mutase reaction: reverse of alkyl group with hydrogen on adjacent carbon, without adding hydrogen to solvent. Breaking weak bond -> formation of a radical.
