Document Summary
Define: a disorder that occurs when brain dysfunction affects thinking processes, memory, consciousness, or perception: temporary (transient) or permanent. Dsm-5 only classifies three major categories, but recognizes that symptoms of these disorders result from many different processes / conditions: major neurocognitive disorder, mild neurocognitive disorder, delirium. Assessment of brain damage and neurocognitive functioning: first step is gathering background information. Major neurocognitive disorder: define: condition involving significant decline in independent living skills and one or more areas of cognitive functioning. Cog functioning: attention and focus, decision making and judgment, language, learning and memory, visual perception, or social understanding. Gradual onset followed by continuing cognitive decline. Age = strongest risk factor: mild neurocognitive disorder. Define: condition involving a modest decline in at least one major cognitive area. Able to participate in normal activities, but may need a little extra time. Often intermediate stage between normal aging and major nd or dementia.
