PSYCH 112 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Long-Term Memory, Echoic Memory, Semantic Memory
Document Summary
Memory: the retention of information over time. Memory illusion: false but subjectively compelling memory. When we try to recall an event we actively reconstruct our memories using the cues & info available to us. Sensory memory: tied to raw materials of experience and perceptions of the world; brief storage of perceptual info b4 its passed to short term memory: iconic memory: visual sensory memory, echoic memory: auditory sensory imagery. Encoding: process of getting information into our memory banks. Mnemonic: a learning aid, strategy, or device that enhances recall: music: can improve long-term retention. Storage: process of keeping info in memory. Schema: organized knowledge structure or mental model that we"ve stored: can lead us to remember things that never happened, sometimes in memory oversimplify and create memory illusions. Retrieval: reactivation or reconstruction of experiences from our memory stores. Retrieval cue: hint that makes it easier for us to recall information. Recognition: selecting previously remembered info from an array of options.
