BIOL 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 29: Cytosol, Ribose, Prokaryote
Document Summary
*mutant alleles do exist and create mutant enzymes. *when a mutant enzyme is present, you create a mutant phenotype: alkaptonuria: alkaptonuria is caused by the lack of an enzyme called homogentisic dioxygenase (hgd). (early onset osteoarthritis, mrsa: a bacterium responsible for several difficult-to-treat infections in humans. A gene is a dna sequence and they cannot produce a phenotype by themselves, something else is responsible for their expression. If you alter a gene, this results in an altered phenotype so you produce an altered enzyme or an altered protein. They used mold for their experiment (bread mold) They used mold because it is haploid (can show the recessive situation-can see all of the mutations) All of the mutants are part of the arginine pathway. Ended up with the thought that each enzyme in this pathway was created by a different mutation. Originally they thought that each gene determined one phenotype.
