Routine activity and rational choice theory april 16th, 2018. Concerned with crime (a present time) and not criminality (develops over time) Tries to explain why a crime event happens. No interested in the root cause of crime or larger social problems. Crime occurs in the context of everyday life-- routine activities. Called (cid:440)opportunity theories(cid:441) or (cid:440)environmental criminology(cid:441) because they examine how features of the physical and social environment present or limit crime opportunities. (cid:440)everybody could so at least some crime at some time(cid:441) (felson 1998). Results generally support the conclusion that routine activities influence crime rates across ecological units (geographical location) Most research tests only the guardianship component of the theory. Osgood et al. (1996): a key routine activity that fosters crime: time spent in unstructured socializing with peers, without adult authorities. Can relate to social bonds theory and differential association.
