Civil war was fought over states rights: right they were fighting over was slave rights. 1866- kkk forms in tennessee originally seen as club and are considered nations first terrorist group. 1868- 14th amendment black men are made citizens. 1871- kkk act made it a federal offense to interfere w/ someone"s right to vote, jury. 1875- civil rights act meant to protect black rights opens up public services to blacks. Share cropping- renting a plot of land and having to grow a certain amount of land in order to earn money. A lot of these ppl cant read or write which leaves them in constant: the separate but equal is legal debt.
