BIOLOGY 152 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Wood Frog, Prunus Pensylvanica, Northern Range
Document Summary
Bio152 lecture 5 homeostasis ii and the nervous system. The wood frog has the farthest northern range. It pulls water away from its organs and tissues. They have antifreeze chemicals they help prevent the formation of crystals, but do not prevent freezing. An organisms climate envelope: climate envelope having to do with conditions of temperature, precipitation, seasonality. Organisms have an optimal temperature where there survivability and reproduction is at its greatest. As you go from medial to lateral, the survival and reproduction rates increase. Temperature tolerance has a big role to play in this. Sugar maple is adapted to more moderate temperatures. Pin cherry has a broad tolerance to temperatures, but is relatively warm. Atomic and molecular levels: membrane proteins in nerve cells admits a flow of ions. Cellular level: electric signal mediated by ion flows travels down length of neuron. Tissue level: electric signals travel from cell to cell in nervous tissue.
