Document Summary

Web 2. 0: internet applications that facilitate user interaction, collaboration, and information sharing. Digital convergence has fostered more participatory culture including media fandom. Henry jenkins: web 2. 0 is fandom without the stigma . Major shift from traditional mass media, broadcast model. The term user implies an activity that involves both media making and meaning making. The term audience only satisfies the activities of listening and watching. Most people on facebook are only passive users in which they don"t post and just view. Internet audiences do important work as audiences and not simply as producers . Even clicking, liking, and reposting reflect a changed relationship between media makers and their audiences. Increasingly all of us are also media appraisers and distributors. Digital divide- the gulf between those who have ready access to computers and the internet, and those who do not. Participation gap- gap in digital skills and competencies, often produced by differential access to technology and broadband.
