POLISCI 201 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Alexis De Tocqueville, Individualism, Soft Despotism
Document Summary
Public opinion if public officials only do what they think is right, much opposition. Two critics are democracy (how there is no real public opinion) Nietzsche: opinion of the mass does not matter, individual achievement is ideal, culture is judged based on how many successful figures it produced. Have a branch of government that is somewhat removed from government. Can be negative if a group has too much power, no restraints. Majority is a worse tyranny than a king who leads with tyranny. The rule of majority is a mix. Roark, and architect, represents an ideal man. At the end of the film he is standing ontop of a building looking down upon all else. Spirit of man and integrity (integrity to do what you think is right) A man (a person who thinks) vs. mob (and a group who follows each other) Or do we just fear the opposition an alternative belief could raise.
