You move into other peoples territories to expand your own power: this can be done through acquisition of resources, their population, or even the physical territory, this is a realists reason for imperialism. Usually takes place in the form of colonies : the us is unique in that they have control over a lot of the globe but do not use any colonies ii) In the forming of the us when they acquired new territory they would usually make it a state: now through business, politics, etc the us maintains a grasp on the world without colonies, hegemony- indirect, non-territorial control. This is how the us in uences the world today: european imperialism was racist. Not just racist based on skin color. They criticized and changed their colonies cultures: for instance missionaries would try and often succeeded to convert natives to christianity, once the whole world was colonized europe began to look inward.
