Description
Sleep & Learning • Role of Synapses in 3 Kinds of Learning & in Memory o learning is a relatively permanent change in behavior as a result of experience o 3 types of learning:  habituation – response to stimulus weakens w/ repeated presentations of stimulus • neural basis o motor neuron receiving less NT from sensory neuron across synapse o change must be taking place in presynaptic axon terminal of sensory neuron • calcium channels habituate o Ca influx decreases in response to voltage changes associated w/ action potentials  sensitization – enhanced response to some stimulus • PTSD is example of heightened response to stimuli • neural basis o K channels slower to open, can’t repolarize cell as quickly • K+ Channels sensitize o slow K+ repolarization causes more Ca+ to enter, therefore more NT released, bigger response
