PSYCH 297R Lecture Notes - Lecture 14: Therapeutic Relationship, Spring Break, Personalization
Document Summary
Cbt is the most extensively studied therapeutic treatment for ed. Cbt is a short-term, highly structured therapy approach derived from beck"s cognitive therapy work with depression and anxiety and ellis"s behavioral therapy techniques. Studies on cbt have found that it lead to a greater reduction in ed symptoms than other therapies or medication alone. Based on the idea that our thoughts, not external people or situations, cause our feelings and behaviors. A good therapeutic relationship with the client is necessary, but not the focus of therapy. Based on stoic philosophy: teaches that undesirable situations are inevitable, whether we are upset about them or not. If we become upset then we have two problems instead of one. Emphasizes the benefits of feeling clam in the face of undesirable situations. Uses the socratic method: ask questions of client and encourages client to ask questions of self design to challenge thinking.
