PSYCH 305 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Student Engagement, Impulsivity, Classroom Management
Document Summary
Power over: students: teachers can give consequences, fail, favoritism, intelligence; can be negative or positive. What do we have the power to do?- choice theory behaviors, not others, provide info only. Even w/more powerful teacher, students can theoretically do whatever they want. We can only provide info about what we want, we can"t physically make them. More likely to engage in power over if they are scared. Auditorium arrangement: most effective when teachers want attention to focus on direct instruction and wants to minimize interaction between students, somewhat cramped. Large circle : more participation during whole class brainstorming, those near teacher can"t make eye contact w/teacher, takes teacher out of leadership role. Face to face seating: leads to higher student distraction, but ideal to facilitate collaboration during small group discussion, no eye contact with teacher/student. Different seating patterns elicit distinct behavior from students. Useful to match seating patterns to instructional strategies and learning goals.
