SOCIOL 105 Lecture 6: Child Attachments - Parent's POV
Document Summary
When is behavior social: behavior is social when it reflects the actual, imagined, or implied presence of other people. Social psychologists study how the thoughts, feelings, and actions are influenced by others: the influence of others is what gives behavior a social face. About topic 2: a classic topic in sociological social psychology because it links the individual and the society, can be approached either from the perspective of the child or the parent. What is a parent: a socially competent adult. Involves more than the ability to provide food, clothing, and shelter: emotionally invested, consistently available, non-substitutable, special, relationship. Parenting as a social role: is is the daily stuff that matters most. Taking kid to the doctor, arranging and transportation to child care, monitoring safety and whereabouts, and scheduling playdates, cooking dinner, putting child to bed. It is things like this which shape the emotional quality of the parent-child relationship.
