Morbidity the state of being diseased. Mortality the state of being dead. A characteristic that, if present, increases the probability of disease in a group of individuals who have that characteristic compared to a group of individuals who do not have that characteristic. A branch of medical science that deals with the incidence, distribution, and control of disease in a population. The study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations and the application of this study to control of health problems". (world health organization) The use of the phrase health-related states or events" rather than the older term disease frequency" reflects the fact that our concept of health now includes absence of disease. Health-related outcomes may be defined simply, for example, as disease present" or disease absent"; or graded, for example normal weight", overweight" or obese".
