Non-material culture - religion, politics, philosophy, music, ideology: basic components of a culture. Ordinary norms - handshakes, holding doors for others: primates - emerged 12 million years ago, evolved into humans and great apes. Went from being tree-dwellers to walking upright on the ground. Around 5 million years ago, primates became hunter-gatherers, developed weapons: around 250,000 years ago, homo sapiens ( thinking beings ) began to emerge. Homo sapiens in the middle east discovered that they could harvest crops on their own and use agriculture (horticulturalists), which sparked the beginning of civilization.
