If you"re physically active, you can eat more. 6 major classes of nutrients: 4 macronutrients (consume them in large amounts, usually in grams) Water: 2 micronutrients (consume in small amounts) Most nutrients are essential: required in the diet. General functions of nutrients: some provide energy, some promote growth and development, some help regulate body processes including metabolism. Carbohydrates: come mostly from plants (fruits, vegetables and grains) and dairy products. Complex carbohydrates [starches, glycogen and bers (multiple sugars bonded together): essential carbohydrate is glucose. Come mostly from animals (fats) and plants (oils) Structure is 3 fatty acids bonded to glycerol: the fatty acid maybe saturated or unsaturated (cis mono, cis poly, or trans fatty acids). Essential fatty acids include cis poly: cholesterol (egg yolks, meats, shell sh, dairy) Make steroids and vitamin d: lecithin (egg yolks, soy products, ingredient) Part of cell membranes and source of choline. Proteins: only source of nitrogen and sulfur, come from both plants and animals.
