Greater apes are the homonidae, whereas the lesser apes are the gibbons. Social organization: monogamous and territorial, occupy same small ranges in isolated pairs. Defend these territories with loud morning calls, often duets. Interbirth interval, 2 yrs, mature after 8 yrs. Carpenter in 1940, the big first guy to study primates. Studied gibbons because he thought they would be good models for human evolution.
