He provided order to society by defining ways that people should live and work together, such as: fatherly love, children should obey their parents. Tolerance is the eldest brother and humility in the youngest brother. Proper behavior by the husband and submission by the wife. Ways to enhance harmony in the family and society as a whole. Beginning in the 1860s, the french started to establish a foothold in south vietnam because of problems the french catholic missionaries were having. French influence was strong among the upper class.
