FSCN 1012 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nutrition Education, Heat Exhaustion, Female Athlete Triad
Document Summary
Address nutritional challenges (iron deficiency, gi problems) Coordinate nutrition care with athletic medicine & strength and conditioning staff. Fuel timing to optimize training, practice & competition. Dehydration & increased sweat rate w/ training. Increased glycogen use & decreased energy availability. Decreased strength, speed, energy & concentration, increased injury, heat exhaustion and muscle cramping. Recognize symptoms: dizziness, fainting, nausea, vomiting, confusing, decreased concentration, lethargy, headache. Personalize fluid replacement based on sweat rate and training schedule. Water gorging because of constant encouragement o drink water. Discouraged from sports drinks in effort to lean out . Nausea, vomiting, headache, confusion, decreased concentration, lethargy, much like dehydration with some differences: muscle cramps/spasms & seizures. Prevents adequate glycogen mobilization & hinders performance. Effect: decreased blood pressure & o2 cost of exercise. Increase conversion of nitrates to nitric oxidea vasodilator. Used mainly in beetroot juice and supplement in sport. Female athlete triad now = relative energy deficiency in sports.
