Document Summary
Traditional perspective of psychopathology: current diagnosis are categorical. Natural to think about types of people rather than patterns of variables: medical model. Descriptive- based on classification thorough symptoms presentation. Focuses on the kind of problem individual has. Long held by psychiatry and embodies in dsm. Assumptions of medical model: psychiatry is a brand of medicine based on science, psychiatry treats people with illness, who are different than people who are not sick. Abnormal and normal behavior are qualitatively different: disorders are qualitatively different from one another, classification should be based on reliable description of symptoms. Limitations of medical model: soft normal/abnormal boundary. With rare exceptions, normal behavior is not qualitatively different than abnormal behavior: high comorbidity between disorders. Current psychiatric phenotypes have high and predictable patterns of comorbidity. Ex: anxiety &depression; antisocial issues & substance use. Co-occurrence greater than base rates would suggest: diagnostic heterogeneity within disorders (lumping) People with same disorder look really different: nos diagnosis common.
