Document Summary

Ethics in research: must respect participants because we have a duty to protect sensitive/vulnerable populations. Ex: children, prisoners (people who can"t really say no to the experiment) The research should benefit the population/society: with this being said the research should not harm the population/society to find a benefit for it. Ex: releasing toxins into the water of a certain area to see how the population reacts can harm them and not benefit it. Components of informed consent: description of study, purpose of research, time commitment, foreseeable risks, time commitment. Ex: will only take 5 minutes: confidentiality, voluntary nature, compensation. Informed consent- a norm in which subjects base their voluntary participation in research projects based on a full understanding of the possible risks involved. Anonymity- can"t identify who gave us the information: ex: wouldn"t be able to. Confidentiality- keep information safe to protect the participant: get rid of original survey after information is in data collector on the computer.
